Shannon is a strong running, abrasive loose forward from Marist club who can cover the lock position. When available he has figured strongly for the Mako since 2016. He has played for the Highlanders for five seasons since 2018.

He made his All Blacks debut in 2018 (# 1172) and has played 21 Tests including four in the 2019 Rugby World Cup. Shannon played 4 Mako matches in 2021 before going on the All Blacks northern hemisphere tour and is a member of the 2022 squad.
