Alex debuted for the Mako in 2015 fresh out of the 2014 Christchurch Boys High School team that won the South Island secondary schools final. His form in the 2016 Mako campaign earned him a call up by the Chiefs and a contract extension with them through 2022 and has now played 54 matches.

Alex represented the Maori All Blacks in 2019 & 2020 in 5 matches and played in the back-to-back NPC Premiership victories in each of those years. Alex has been a form mid-fielder over the last few seasons, and his performances for the Mako saw his peers name him the season’s Mako Man. In addition, Alex was rewarded by the NZ selectors with a position in the All Blacks XV squad to tour the UK.
