Originally from the North Shore, Max was selected for the Blues U18's and U20's teams and NZ AFL in 2018. After moving to Nelson in 2019 to play for Marist, he made his debut for Tasman in 2021 playing seven games and helping the Mako to the NPC Premiership Finals.

He was subsequently contracted to the Highlanders for the 2022 Super Rugby season, playing 7 matches. Max consolidated his position in the Mako in 2022, playing 9 matches at both lock and blindside flanker.
