Tasman v Auckland review

The Makos created their own piece of team history with a comprehensive away win against Auckland at Eden Park (having previously beaten them twice in Nelson (2009 & 2011) and earning a draw in 2014 on Eden Park).

The quality of the rugby from both teams was impressive given the wet weather conditions. Playing into a stiff wind the Makos scored 2 tries to 3 but only trailed by 23 – 24 at half time. A further two tries and faultless goal kicking (11 from 11) completed the 49 – 31 bonus point win.

Every Makos player put their hand up on the night with great effort and diligence but none shone brighter than hooker Andrew Makalio. An Auckland B rep player last year, Andrew took it to many of his former team mates with great gusto.

As mentioned the goal kicking display was impeccable in tough conditions. Marty Banks kicked 4 conversions and 6 penalties while David Havili broke Auckland’s resistance (and the internet) with a monster 60 metre penalty.

Skipper Shane Christie was his usual inspiring and destructive self in another iron man performance on defence and carries into the heart of the Auckland pack.

This was a win for the ages that captivated all who follow the Makos.
