Two wins might seem poor return for the season – but it depends on you point of view. Those two wins were against the eventual Championship winner Hawke’s Bay and, not for the first time, Auckland. No other team scored as many as the five tries that Tasman did against eventual Premiership winner Canterbury. No other team scored more than the four bonus points that Tasman did for finishing within sevens points of their opponent. No one could question the spirit and competitiveness of this Tasman team.

Last year’s emerging star Tom Marshall further demonstrated his attacking flair and defensive surety. Earlier in year injuries gave him unexpected opportunity with the Crusaders – opportunity he grasped and demonstrated to a wider audience what an outstanding talent he is. Tasman’s most capped player Robbie Malneek occupied the right wing, but seniority does not mean that you don’t have to go looking for work. On the other wing national Under 20 representative Mitchell Scott was full of youthful exuberance – more experience should improve his decision making. Newcomer Kieron Fonotia was a surprise package at centre, capable of incisive breaks and solid defence. There was a warm welcome back from a season overseas for captain Andrew Goodman – a wise head and reliable boot at second five-eight. There was never any question that James Marshall would relinquish the first five-eight position. His performance with ball in hand continues to impress. The first two in the alphabetical team list were the two halfbacks Steve Alfeld and Shawn Begg. There was little between them as both served their backlines well.

Also returning was Mark Bright to play every game and bring up his 50 games for the Union. His five tries for the season have only been exceeded once in Tasman’s short history. Shane Christie was a high-energy openside flanker who is developing nicely. Veteran Jonathan Poff and novice Liam Squire shared the blindside duties. Joe Wheeler had a great season at lock finishing the season among the leading try scorers for the team. He had interesting apprentices in Pablo Huete from Chile and Riki Hoeata, younger brother of new All Black Jarrad. Former Otago lock  Filipo Levi appeared briefly before being required for Rugby World Cup duties with Samoa. Fai Mika and Sam Prattley were the preferred props. Tasman looks set to get good mileage out of Prattley. Already a proven campaigner, Quentin MacDonald continued to impress at hooker. He had to perform well as waiting for the first slip up was talented Francis Smith.
