Sam hails from Gisborne Boys HS and moved back to Gisborne from Australia making the Hurricanes U18's in 2017 before joining the Crusaders Academy in Christchurch.

He joined the Mako in 2019 as an injury replacement and after a very good club season for Kahurangi in 2020 played 10 matches for the Mako including the 2020 NPC Premiership Final. He played a further 10 matches in 2021, developing into a very good tight-head prop.

After an off-season with the Seattle Seawolves, playing 12 matches, Sam returned to play in 9 matches for the Mako in 2022.
