Te Ahiwaru hails from the East Coast township of Te Araroa. From 2015 to 2016, Te Ahiwaru played in the St Kentigern College 1st XV team as number 8.In 2016 he joined the Crusaders Academy - Nelson and was chosen in the NZ Maori U18 Development Team.

An aggressive ball runner, Te Ahiwaru made his Mako debut in 2017 and came off the bench in the 2019 NPC Premiership victory. In 2020 Te Ahiwaru played all 12 matches in the back-to-back Premiership winning campaign, and a further 8 appearances in 2021. He was rewarded with a 2020 Super Rugby contract with the Fijian Drua. Te Ahiwaru made 8 appearances for the Mako in 2022.
