Opinion: Tasman’s ‘sparkies’ ignite second half revival

They call them the “Sparkies”. These are the Tasman bench players whose role it is to come onto the paddock, usually around the 60-minute mark, and add spark to the Mako’s game.

Despite Tasman reeling off six straight wins to open their 2019 Mitre 10 Cup season, Mako vice-captain Quinten Strange says there is no problem keeping the players’ feet firmly on the ground. The Nelson College product, a Mako since 2016 and a Crusader since 2017, said while expectation and hype surrounding the team had increased as the wins stacked up, the feeling in camp was no different.

The current Mitre 10 Cup premiership leaders will play two games, against American Major League Rugby champions the Seattle Seawolves and the Houston SaberCats, in January next year. The Tasman team to travel to the States will be selected in October and will be made up of contracted Tasman players who do not have Super contracts - as well as Tasman B and U19 players.
